You’re a busy dad. Your golf game isn’t what it used to be. It’s hard enough finding the time to play nowadays and you’ve had the same clubs in your garage since before iPhone's were invented. Your driver has more dents on it than potholes in Rhode Island’s roads. Every round your goal is to break 100. Sometimes it works out, sometimes it doesn’t.

The Search Begins

You decide it’s finally time to treat yourself. You go full Rain Man researching golf clubs, shaft stiffness, driver angles, club materials, and pro shop recommendations. The local golf pro amps you up. He tells you with a new set of clubs your swing will be smooth as butter, and your score will drop significantly. He hands you a few clubs to swing on the simulator that are way out of your price range but you figure what the hell it can’t hurt to try.

The First Swing

You step up to the ball, take the club back, and smack the ball better than you have since you were 20 years old. The sound of the ball hitting the club face perfectly rings through the store. Everyone stares at you like the second coming of tiger woods. The golf pro amps you up even more and finally you decide to take your new clubs home. You strap them in your backseat as carefully as the first time you brought your newborn child home for the first time.

The First Round With New Clubs

The pro shop employee checks you in and you can’t help but ask him what the course record is. You give the starter a cocky head nod on your way to the first tee box. New ProV1 on the tee. You take your new driver out of the bag like removing Excalibur from the stone. You think to yourself “nice and easy just like the simulator” Take the club back, full follow through.

The ball goes sailing… and curving… aaaannndd it’s gone. What the hell? Must’ve been nerves. I’ll drop up ahead.

The rest of the round goes exactly the same. Fore right. Fore left. Chunk after chunk. After 18 disappointing holes you tally up your final score. You stare at that final number.

115...

15 strokes over the last time you played. You head back to the car with your head held down. You’re not sure, but it sounds like the cart girl is cracking jokes behind your back. You toss your clubs in the trunk of your car. You sit in the drivers seat and sit there in silence contemplating your hole life.

In Conclusion
