Remember that fish you got that one time that blew everyone away, won you some records, and made everyone envy you? Yeah me neither.

Dad fishing stories often come with a trophy fish at the end, but what about the ones that got away? The biggest fish I never caught is the kind of tale that makes every angler’s blood boil with a shot of frustration that makes you want to snap your pole in half. It’s not just about the size of the fish, but the battle that comes with it. Add in the heartbreak of losing it right at the last second and you got yourself a story. Let’s dive into the story of that elusive catch and what it taught me.

The Setup: Freshwater Fishing Dreams

Picture this: a quiet morning by the reservoir, calm water, and a cooler with cold beer. I had my new reel setup, 25Lb rated braided fishing line, and a collection of lures and worms from the discount shelf at Bass Pro. Plan for the day? Catch some hogs and have a good time. Dads everywhere know the feeling: the excitement of casting out your bait and feeling that line pull tight.

I was using a black/blue chatter bait, the kind that teases bass into striking with a splash. I had a similar one I had used in the past that caught some monsters, but unfortunately that one took a trip to tree branch central last year and was never seen again. Figures.

The Battle

After a few casts, I felt the unmistakable tug. I yelled FISH ON just like i was the Temu version of Jeremy Wade and set the hook. The fishing reel screamed as the bass took off, pulling line with a power that made me question if the line would hold. Never had an issue with braided line in the past so figured just let him run a bit to tire him out before trying to pull him in. The lure had done its job, and the bass was hooked. Looked over to my buddies to grab the net, but they were less than useful as they indulged in a few too many cooler beverages prior to getting this big guy hooked.

The adrenaline was pumping and the guys were trying to get the net ready. I imagined weighing this thing and getting some awesome pictures. But then, just as I was about to bring it, the big guy took a run off to the side of the shore, weaving under some fallen branches. The more I reeled in, the more I could see the line fraying. Sent my buddy across the fallen tree with the net to make a last ditch effort to bring him in. Next thing I know, I hear a snap. Not only did the line break off, but so did the tree branch my buddy was standing on. Now I was out of a fish, and he's head over heels into the water.

Lessons From the One That Got Away

We continued on that day and still got a couple pounders here and there. My buddy looked like he got whipped into a pool by Randy Savage but he was in good spirits. All in all, it's probably for the best I didn't reel in that fish. Now I can tell people it was as big as I want without showing any proof of weighing it. For those reading this today, that bass was at least 30 pounds.

For those there that day... it was maybe 8 pounds...

But prove me wrong. You can't. Just take my word for it.
